maryland is melting. record temperatures are scorching the state. tonight how to cope and when will this heat wave snap?

>> good evening. i am gigi barnett. adam has the day off. the intense heat isn't keeping everyone inside, but those wjz found out and about braving the temperatures seem to be enjoying any shade they can find. for some the heat is no excuse to flack off from work. we found these guys working high on this billboard. monique has the latest on the growing health concerns this heat is creating. let's begin with meteorologist bernadette woods who is tracking this excessive heat warning. hey, bern. >> yes, it is hot as we all know. we will show you some of the numbers. heat warning in effect to 10:00 tonight to all the bright pink counties. if not in a warning, you are in at least a watch. we are at 102 degrees. look at the triple digits down

there from hagerstown to tuckett. the dewpoint has dropped a little bit today, but it still makes it feel like 104 degrees outside in baltimore. 107 in cumberland, hagerstown. we hit a record on the day. 103 degrees. the old record was 101. i want to show you doppler radar because it's still dry in maryland but off to the north is a strong cold front and it is moving southward. we don't have anything in forecast yet but that could be changing coming up. complete first weather warning coverage continues. monique has more on how officials are trying to keep this dangerous heat from turning more deadly. monique. >> reporter: gigi, today volunteers were going door to door with ice and water but state leaders are also asking people to check on their neighbors. and if you still don't have power they say you need to find a place to cool off. as the heat wave stretched into its 11th straight day mother

nature surged temperatures higher into the triple digits. >> too hot. extremely hot. >> reporter: volunteers from the maryland defense force teamed up with mima and the city to go door to door with hot weather supplies. >> we are bringing them water, feet, and if they need a ride back to a cooling area we're doing that, too. we are just making sure everybody is okay. >> reporter: state leaders have put on excessive heat advisory into effect across maryland. >> greater now than the beginning of this heat wave because you have a cumulative effect of the heat on people. >> reporter: peter vi landson from the county health depend says the heat warning should not be taken lightly. already nine heat deaths in baltimore. friday a new death reported? baltimore county. >> we are asking everyone to check in on their neighbors once a day, twice a day, three times a day and see how they are doing. particularly elderly. those who are not as mobile.

>> reporter: b.g. and other utility crews are still working to restore service it and 5,000 customers. state leaders are urging residents who don't have power to reach out to cooling centers until repairs are made. and health leaders say if at all possible avoid being outside between the hours of noon and five and that's because that's when the sun is at its strongest. gigi, back to you. >> good advice. thank you, monique. here is a look at the latest numbers from bge. right now a total of 7317 people remain without power. 1,000 from the storm. 6,000 from new heat-related outages. in baltimore county there is more than 2,000 in the dark. baltimore city almost 800. and howard county there is still more than 600 customers still in the dark this evening. this heat wave is not only griping maryland.

drew levinsohn reports that much of the country is baking during this summer sizzle. >> reporter: people from the midwest to the east coast sweated through another blistering day. >> hot. really hot. >> i'm completely drenched. >> reporter: temperatures soared above 100 degrees in several cities, including philadelphia, washington and st. louis. utility companies are stressed. >> the heat always gives us a challenge. we expect scattered outedges. >> reporter: the national weather service issued heat warnings for half the country. this heat wave has health officials very concerned. the new york health department has urged its residents to avoid staying outside too long and asked them to look in on their neighbors. especially the elderly. in chicago authorities say a 64-year-old woman apparently dropped dead from heat exhaustion inside her apartment. the heat is blamed for the a least 24 deaths. and air conditioner give away brought relief in charlotte. >> it's been about 100 something in my house. i have been just -- it's been

middle. >> reporter: some sought refuge in city fountains. deborah leaderman tried to lick the heat with ice cream. >> ice cream helps and being around my fantastic family because they are cool and hip. >> reporter: weather forecasters expect a cold front to move in monday. problem is it will most likely bring severe weather with it. >> nearly 240 cities nationwide set all time highs over the past 30 days. remember washington remember wjz is always on. log on to wjz.com. back here in police in baltimore are asking for your help in locating a missing teenager. this is 15-year-old cameron wilkerson. detectives say he was last seen on thursday in the 2900 block of edison highway. he is a foster child and developmentally challenged. police ask anyone with

information to call 911. it's an oyster reef unlike any other here in maryland. for the first time the chesapeake bay foundation has established a oyster habitat that fishermen and residents can reach out and touch. tim williams has more from anne arundel county. >> one adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water every kay. you think of all the millions of oysters and they are a factory for cleaning the water. >> reporter: this week the chesapeake bay foundation dumped nearly 3.5 million baby oysters on to a reef in the river. the volunteers are taking them out to the reef site where they will be added to two million exists shells already on the bay floor. why is this important? >> it is the first reef we know of that is immediately next to a public park. most oyster reeves are out in a river -- reefs are out in a river quite a ways from where people can see them or fish on them. >> reporter: over the next few

years this reef is not only expected to draw fisherman but you constrict to a struggling oyster population. it should grow and mature once settled. the project will be ongoing. >> first of all, these reefs attract little worms and other aquatic life which the fish then feed on and, of course, the fishermen love to fish as well. so it's a really rich, trying habitat. >> reporter: one that benefits life both in and around the boy. >> for more information look to a link on this story at be wjz.com. we're back in just a moment. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

it is hot in baltimore. mostly sunny and 102 degrees in

central maryland right now. the complete first warning forecast so coming right up. but first. that's a televised political debate in jordan. it turned violent when a member of the country's parliament threw his shoe and then pulled a gun out while arguing with the political activists. he did not fire his weapon, but a complaint was filed with police and he may lose his political office now. the men were discussing the crisis in syria. a small ohio town is dealing with a horrific mass shooting. five people dead, including the gunman. police say robert brassen shot his girlfriend and killed three more people in a house a short distance away. police cornered him a few hours later in a cemetery. that's when they say he turned the gun on himself. the violence left neighbors shaken and concerned. >> just shocked that this happened in our little town. it was scary.

>> police gave no motive for the shootings. they say four homicides make it the single most violent day in that county's history. a runaway semi nearly causes a major catastrophe at a gas station? ohio and it's all caught on tape. take a look at this as this white truck is traveling down the hill in front of the station. it rolls on to its side and stopped just short of that gas punch. the driver said the brakes failed and the load shift the just as he tried to make that left tunnel. the driver and passenger escaped injury. if you are running with the bulls in spain, watch out for the horns. several injuries marked the first day of the famed running of the bulls. a 73-year-old thrill seeker was most seriously injured after being gored in the leg.

welcome back everybody. a nice place to be because the temperatures for the 11th day in a row are 90 degrees or higher. we have an excessive heat warning in effect for a lot of the state. elsewhere we have heat watches. everyone is dealing with something this afternoon because temperatures have exceeded

100 degrees. 103 is where we topped out at marshal. we are still hanging on to 102. look at all of the triple digits. now, the dewpoint was in the 70s for the first half of the day. it feels like 104 in baltimore. that was up to 107 at one point today. look it. across the entire map except for oakland it peels like it's over 100 degrees. just off to the north some different colors coming our direction than we have seen in quite some time and that's the relief that will be moving in our direction. still a lot of heat for us today and into tomorrow. some of that cooler air will come at a price because not that far away there is a strong front. already some weather associated it in pennsylvania and parts of upstate new york. that is going to move south. the chance for strong thunderstorms through the overnight hours for anything

that does hold together here. but then tomorrow once again that boundary is going to be on top of us. we have that chance for severe weather. norman, oklahoma [ inaudible ] we will be talking about those on the television side. now, here is our front come through the area. by monday it's pushing off to the south. still a chance for a couple of showers and thunderstorms around with it close enough. here comes the cooler air. the forecast looks like this. winds out of the west turning around to the north at 5 to 10 knots out there. tonight the forecast possibly a strong thunderstorm. 77 degrees. then tomorrow, take a look at this, still 98. still very hot. still muggy with the chance for strong maybe severe thunderstorms. after that gets out of here still a couple of showers. maybe some thunderstorms possible monday. we will be in the 80s. look at this stretch of weather in the 80s for the middle part of the week.
